Introduction:
Humans are an integral part of ecosystems. Hair is recognized as an informative and reliable biological material that reflects the environmental conditions as well as the presence of diseases and health deviations in the human body. The chemical composition of hair reflects both the internal physiological state and the impact of various exogenous factors. Due to the slow growth rate of hair, its analysis provides an average concentration of macro- and microelements over several years. Monitoring of trace element content in hair can address a wide range of scientific challenges, including the indication of environmental pollution and the assessment of harmful factors affecting human health.

Methods:
10000 hair samples were collected from adults and children residing in the Krasnoyarsk Krai. Laboratory studies to determine the concentration of trace elements in the hair of the examined individuals were carried out using mass spectrometry with inductively coupled argon plasma.

Results:
No significant changes in the hair elemental status were observed over the last 20 years. The concentration of chemical elements in hair reflects the ecological state of the territory, which is formed under the influence of natural and/or anthropotechnogenic factors. Database has been created that allows to obtain reference values for the content of chemical elements in hair for the studied region. For the 2015-2024 years decreasing trends were observed in hair concentrations of toxic trace elements (mercury, lead and cadmium) in presence of steady-state (calcium, magnesium, zinc) or elevated (selenium) levels of their antagonists.

Conclusions:
Conducted analyses confirmed usefulness and necessity of conducting research basing on the use of sensitive biomarkers, such as hair. Hair analysis allows for an assessment of the natural environment contamination, which is particularly important for the research on populations inhabiting areas with different degree of pollution. Studies targeting subgroups of populations have shown a direct relationship between hair metal content and exposure to various environmental pollutants, especially in the northern area of the Krasnoyarsk Krai due to air, water and food pollution.
