ABSTRACT
Disordered eating behaviours and eating disorders (EDs) are serious disturbances to a person’s eating behavior that negatively affect physical as well as psychological health. Existing literature provides convincing evidence that athletes demonstrate a greater prevalence of eating disorders than the general population, both at clinical and subclinical levels. Athletes' nutritional assessment is a complicated and systematic process of collecting information in order to make conclusions regarding the nature and cause of health problems linked to their nutritional status and affecting their dietary choices. The nutritional needs of athletes with disordered eating patterns behaviors are not static and differ depending on the requirements of each training goal and the athletes’ overall needs. The assessment process may include the collection of financial, social, medical, and psychological information which affects food choice and dietary practices. The use of appropriate tools is required both to identify athletes in need of support and to monitor dietary intervention and their impact on athletic performance when required. The purpose of this presentation is to provide valid and reliable tools and methods that can be used by experts to identify athletes with disturbed eating behavior.
